I tried my very first Aerial Silks workout yesterday at Extension Room and my arms are still sore today! This new ballet fitness studio in downtown Toronto was having an open house celebration and all classes (including the Aerial Silks one) were only $5! I did not even know classes on Aerial Silks were offered in Toronto (I mean Las Vegas, sure). So when I found out about this unique workout, I signed up right away! By the way, the liquid and powder forms of rosin in the picture above were applied to our hands before climbing to improve our grip. Our instructor said that she prefers the liquid version, so that is the one I used. It just left a slight tackiness on my hands, which definitely helped me hold on to the fabric much easier.
Our instructor was Hayley Shannon and she was incredible! These pictures do not do her justice. You should see her performing in this video. Simply amazing! Even though Hayley makes it look so easy, it is not! Trust me. This was such a difficult upper body workout. However, with devotion and effort, one should pick up tricks in no time. Hayley, for instance, has only been doing Aerial Silks for two years and look at all those moves she can do! The best part about this workout was that time flies by so quickly! You just get so tied up with trying the moves (no pun intended) that you do not even notice the time.
If you are interested in trying Aerial Silks, they will be having single class workshops with Jamie Holmes (their regular Aerial Silks instructor) on June 23 and 30 at 10:00-11:30am ($25/class). To help get you prepared for these classes, they will also be having a body conditioning class for Aerial Silks with Natalie Fullerton on June 20 at 7:30-8:30pm ($20). By the way, Jamie Holmes is actually performing tonight with Katy Perry at the MuchMusic Video Awards! Yes, Katy Perry will be having Aerial Silks in her performance tonight! I can’t wait!
If you live in downtown Toronto or are willing to commute from farther away, I highly recommend Extension Room. It is such a beautiful, spacious place. I also tried their Pilates and Yoga classes, which were also very good. I am planning to try their ballet classes next (that is their “specialty” after all) with the founder, Jennifer Nichols, who is also a ballerina (yes, I do mean a real one). But first, I need to recover from all the Aerial Silks, Pilates, and Yoga yesterday. Phew!
Hope everyone had a great weekend!
xox,
Adeline
